Mother’s Day
May 11, 2008
It was Mothers’ Day. Brothers and sisters and many of their mothers gathered together in the name of God to celebrate this meaningful day at our Mothers’ Day special service.
The service opened with Sister Rachel leading us into a powerful praise and worship session. After that, as we are soon moving into our new home in Tsuen Wan, a video promotion was presented with the MTV of the theme song, ‘We are Ready’. Thank God for our talented brothers and sisters and also for our united spirit. We are definitely ready for what He has planned for us ahead!
The Mothers’ Day atmosphere then filled the place when we were shown a slide show of photos of loving mothers and their children. We saw from sweet smiles on faces of new mothers to satisfied eyes of grandmothers. The excited kids from Sunday School then came onto the stage to present us with English, Mandarin and Cantonese poems describing motherly love, and they also sang a song to mothers. The place was filled with laughter. Praise the Lord for these energetic little ones among us.
After that, every mother was presented with a carnation as a token of thanks for their love. Then, Sister Suki shared with us her testimony. God used Sister Suki’s mother to lead her to Christ. Sister Suki was a rebellious girl who did not seem to care much about her family. She also used to challenge God. However, when her mother fell ill, Sister Suki saw the peace God has instilled in her mother’s heart. She finally repented and gave her life to Jesus, who helped her overcome her weakness, and she followed her mother to church. He also made her realize the importance of family. As a lot of Sister Suki’s family members are our brothers and sisters, they are able to see each other every Sunday. Praise God! Sister Suki also used the opportunity to express her gratitude and love to her mother, and presented her with a little gift. It was very sweet of her. Praise God for Sister Suki and her wonderful family!
Pastor Gavin’s sermon from Ephesians 6:1-3 was titled ‘Honoring our mothers’. As God has brought each one of us into this world through our mothers, they are the first one through whom God demonstrated His love to us. It is God’s first commandment that we honor our parents, as it is the right thing to do. Loving and honoring our parents is the hub between our relationship with God and our relationship with those around us. Therefore, we should honor our mothers with both words and action, by loving them, respecting them, obeying them, listening to them, being grateful to them, being patient with them, and most importantly, blessing them with God’s gift of love and salvation. This way, as God has promised, we shall live joyful and prosperous long lives. Thank God for showing His great love to us through our wonderful mothers. Let us not forget what He has commanded us to do.
After the service, we had lunch together at a Chinese restaurant near the church. While we were enjoying the food and fellowship with each other, the Care Department kindly took Polaroid photos for the mothers and their children. The atmosphere was warm and happy. Praise the Lord for the joy-filled day!
