Evangelism Workshop – From Love to Truth

Praise the Lord ! On this Sunday afternoon, nearly 40 of us gathered for our first evangelism workshop. Sister Pik Sai led us in prayers, and Brother Fei led Praise & Worship.

The workshop wasn’t about techniques or arguments. It was about reflecting and sharing. We began with a question: “Have you ever invited someone to church and been rejected?” We heard familiar reasons: busyness, following idols, being introverted, thinking Christianity was all rules, and not ready yet….

We realised that rejection is rarely about us. Everyone has their own timeline. One person accepted Christ on the very first invitation. Another prayed for God to lead her to a Cantonese-speaking church, and after three attempts, she became rooted in this church. A sister accepted Christ three times before she truly committed.

In 8 small groups, each led by a PLT leader with about 5 members, we turned the question around: What finally made YOU say yes? Each leader then summarised the experiences from their group. No two stories were the same, but the common thread was clear: someone was willing to keep inviting. Someone was willing to love first.

Then Pastor Gavin shared the main points of “Love before Truth” with Ephesians 4:15: “Speaking the truth in love.” He unveiled what he called “The missing sequence in modern evangelism.” Too often, we lead with truth: sin, judgment, hell, repentance. These are the right ingredients, but the wrong recipe. When we serve truth without love, we wound the heart and lose the person.

Love opens the door. Truth (Jesus) walks through it. Jesus addressed the Samaritan woman’s needs first, then her sin. He dined with Zacchaeus first, before mentioning his corruption. If we focus only on truth, we harden hearts. If we focus only on love, we compromise. But grace + truth = Jesus, as supported by Romans 2:4 and John 1:14.

The posture of evangelism is not fighting against people. It is fighting for them. “Listen before you speak. Serve without strings. Earn the right to speak the truth. Then speak it gently.” The workshop ended with hope. People have different needs at different times. Some need peace. Some need answers. But all need someone willing to invite and love first.

Praise the Lord ! Let’s continue to follow Jesus, and keep sharing the gospel. Pray for someone, then simply invite. Love opens the door, and Jesus walks through it.
